Day 59. Monochrome Moon 🌑

Sometimes removing colour reveals more than adding detail.

For Day 59, I built a monochrome lunar scene using NASA assets, treating the Moon as a black and white depth study rather than a photoreal render. The goal was to focus on relief, terminator contrast, and crater hierarchy without chromatic distraction.

The stack is compact, with Three.js and WebGL, but the real challenge is tonal control. Without colour, every lighting decision becomes visible. Small shifts in glow, bloom, and shading can either reveal terrain form or flatten it completely.

Under the hood, the scene uses UnrealBloomPass, tone mapping, and a displacement map to enhance relief, along with a small GUI for tuning bloom parameters. Labels are rendered in 2D to stay crisp over the 3D scene.

It connects to earlier terrain-focused posts like Day 56, but takes the opposite approach: instead of using colour to shape perception, it relies entirely on luminance.

A reminder that when geometry is strong enough, minimalism can make it clearer.
