Day 36: 50 valuable vinyls as Voronoi territories. Beatles dominate the collector landscape. #100DayMapChallenge.
Day 36: Voronoi visualization of most valuable vinyl records - #100DayMapChallenge

Day 36. When data visualization meets music history 🎶

What happens when you visualize the most valuable vinyl records ever sold?

This project explores 50 of the most valuable vinyl records using a Voronoi-style visualization, where the entire surface is divided into areas based on parameters such as price and historical relevance. Each region represents a record, and the larger the area, the higher the price it sold for.

The Beatles dominate the list, capturing both fans’ hearts and collectors’ wallets. Yesterday and Today (1966) sold for $234,000, while the famous White Album (1968) reached $790,000.

Built with D3.js, the visualization lets users explore the records interactively. Instead of points or bars, the space is partitioned so that each album occupies its own territory, forming a landscape of musical artifacts.

The challenge was balancing visual aesthetics with data clarity. What emerges is not just a ranking of prices, but a spatial view of how rarity, cultural impact, and iconic pressings shape the collector market.
